We are excited to inform you about an upcoming music performance for our Kindergarten and 3rd grade students. The performance will showcase activities we have been doing all year in class. The students have been working hard to have a great performance. Attire will be casual but feel free to dress nicely. We wanted to provide you with some important details about the event.  Kindergarten students will meet school staff members in the hallway outside of the cafeteria.  Third grade students will meet on mats in front of the stage.

Time: 6:30 but doors will open at 6:15.

Lane County Dental Prevention will return on April 21st and 22nd for round 2 application of fluoride varnish and/or sealants. Only those students who returned the yellow permission form sent home this past fall will participate. For any questions, please contact Nurse Gyna at wohlers_g@4j.lane.edu.

The Accessible Education Parent Group meets the first Thursday of each month at 6:00 in the library. Child care is provided. April 19th at 11:30 am at the Metro Cinemas will be a special movie event with families who are part of the group in a safe, inclusive environment. FREE admission, cheap concessions, RSVP is required. Looking ahead, May 3rd will be a Park Play Date at 1:00 at Striker Field Community Park. Come hang out with other parents and help our kiddos build friendships! Family and friends welcome!

4J’s Safe Routes to School program will soon be teaching bicycle riding skills in your child’s PE classes. Inexperienced riders and those who use training wheels at home will start on balance bikes without pedals. When they learn balance and gliding skills, they may move up to try pedal bikes. The ultimate skills goal is the ability to get on a bicycle and pedal safely without training wheels or physical assistance. First graders who have mastered pedaling may “graduate” to do other PE activities while we continue to work with the learners.

Some helpful information for families:

●  Helmets are required and provided. (Students with their own may choose to bring them.)
●  Sneakers or other regular shoes are better to pedal with than boots or sandals.
●  We go outside when possible, so kids will appreciate being dressed for the weather.
●  If you do not have a bike for your child and do not have the means to get them one, contact Sarah Mazze, 4J Safe Routes to School Coordinator, at mazze_s@4j.lane.edu or (541) 516-0887, and we may be able to get your child a bike.
●  If your child has a bike at home and you see them struggle with pedals, simply take them off. By removing the pedals and encouraging them to use the bike in balance mode, you will reinforce the lessons they worked on at school.
●  Don’t rush pedaling. Let their confidence and ability in biking grow as they continue to practice gliding. (We don’t recommend training wheels, as they deter the use of balance and counteract all the progress made at school.)
●  Be a cheerleader, not a coach. Keep encouraging your child. They shouldn’t need much more support than a simple hand on their back (holding their bike makes it hard for them to figure out their own balance).
●  The best way to keep the bike wheels rolling is to join them. If possible, we encourage you to join your child in riding!

Some students may be comfortable on bikes already. Others could be nervous about trying this new activity on wheels. These students can begin at their own pace with their feet on the ground on the balance bikes. Not all students will become pedalers during their time with us, but we hope they all make progress and gain confidence, while learning to encourage others and share. Oh, yes, we also hope they HAVE FUN!

Nos complace informarles sobre una próxima presentación musical para nuestros alumnos de kínder y tercer grado. La presentación mostrará las actividades que hemos estado realizando durante todo el año en clase. Los alumnos se han esforzado mucho para tener una gran presentación. La vestimenta será informal, pero pueden vestirse elegantemente. Queríamos brindarles algunos detalles importantes sobre el evento. Los alumnos de kínder se reunirán con el personal de la escuela en el pasillo, afuera de la cafetería. Los alumnos de tercer grado se reunirán en tapetes frente al escenario.

El programa de Prevención Dental del Condado de Lane regresará el 21 y 22 de abril para la segunda ronda de aplicación de barniz de flúor y/o selladores. Solo participarán los estudiantes que devolvieron el formulario de permiso amarillo que se envió a casa el otoño pasado. El Grupo de Padres de Educación Accesible se reúne el primer jueves de cada mes a las 6:00 p. m. en la biblioteca. Se ofrece cuidado de niños. El 19 de abril a las 11:30 a. m. en los Cines Metro habrá una película especial con las familias del grupo en un ambiente seguro e inclusivo. Entrada gratuita, concesiones económicas y se requiere confirmación de asistencia. El 3 de mayo tendremos una cita para jugar en el parque a la 1:00 p. m. en el Parque Comunitario Striker Field. ¡Ven a pasar un rato con otros padres y ayuda a nuestros hijos a forjar amistades! ¡Familiares y amigos bienvenidos!

El programa Rutas Seguras a la Escuela de 4J pronto enseñará a andar en bicicleta en las clases de Educación Física de su hijo. Los ciclistas sin experiencia y quienes usan rueditas en casa comenzarán con bicicletas de equilibrio sin pedales. Cuando adquieran el equilibrio y el deslizamiento, podrán probar bicicletas de pedales. El objetivo final es poder subirse a una bicicleta y pedalear con seguridad sin rueditas ni asistencia física. Los alumnos de primer grado que dominen el pedaleo podrán pasar a otras actividades de Educación Física mientras seguimos trabajando con ellos.

Información útil para las familias:

● Se requieren cascos y se proporcionan. (Los estudiantes que traigan uno propio pueden optar por traerlo).
● Es mejor pedalear con zapatillas u otro calzado normal que con botas o sandalias.
● Salimos cuando es posible, por lo que los niños agradecerán estar vestidos según el clima.
● Si no tiene una bicicleta para su hijo y no tiene los medios para conseguirle una, comuníquese con Sarah Mazze, Coordinadora de Rutas Seguras a la Escuela 4J, a mazze_s@4j.lane.edu o al (541) 516-0887, y es posible que podamos conseguirle una bicicleta a su hijo.
● Si su hijo tiene una bicicleta en casa y ve que le cuesta usar los pedales, simplemente quíteselos. Al quitarle los pedales y animarlo a usar la bicicleta en modo de equilibrio, reforzará las lecciones que aprendió en la escuela.
No se apresure a pedalear. Deje que su confianza y habilidad en la bicicleta crezcan a medida que practican el deslizamiento. (No recomendamos las rueditas de entrenamiento, ya que dificultan el uso del equilibrio y contrarrestan todo el progreso escolar).
● Sé un animador, no un entrenador. Anima constantemente a tu hijo. No debería necesitar mucho más apoyo que una simple mano en la espalda (sostener la bicicleta le dificulta mantener el equilibrio).

La mejor manera de que la bicicleta siga rodando es unirse a ellos. Si es posible, ¡te animamos a que montes con tu hijo!

Algunos estudiantes ya se sienten cómodos con las bicicletas. Otros podrían sentirse nerviosos al probar esta nueva actividad sobre ruedas. Estos estudiantes pueden comenzar a su propio ritmo, con los pies en el suelo, en las bicicletas de equilibrio. No todos los estudiantes se convertirán en pedaleadores durante su tiempo con nosotros, pero esperamos que todos progresen y ganen confianza, a la vez que aprenden a animar a los demás y a compartir. ¡Ah, sí, también esperamos que se DIVIERTAN!
