Book Fair this Week!
The Book Fair is open all this week before school and after school, with extended hours on Tuesday for the PTO Trunk-or-Treat.
PTO Trunk-or-Treat, TUESDAY, 5:30-7:00
The PTO 2nd Annual Trunk-or-Treat will be this TUESDAY, 5:30-7:30 in the Holt Parking Lot (so plan to park outside the parking lot area). This year, we will have food trucks to make it a school fundraiser, too, which will be on the playground blacktop area. Host a Trunk or Volunteer. See you there
Please note that the flyer that went home said Tuesday, Oct. 21, when it would have said Tuesday, Oct. 22.
Halloween Dress-Up Rules
Thursday, October 31st is Halloween, and students may come to school dressed up, but the following costume dress code will be enforced:
NO props NO masks (except with teacher permission in class) NO especially scary or gory costumes (i.e., no blood, wounds, etc.) NO inflatable costumes NO dressing as another race, ethnicity, or culture
Individual teachers will determine if parties will take place in their classrooms. A fun alternate activity will be provided for students who do not celebrate this holiday.
From the Holt Library: Oregon Battle of the Books
Hello Parents,
Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) is an exciting reading and trivia competition where students team up to read from a list of selected books and then compete by answering questions about them. There are three divisions for different grade levels, and the competition encourages students to explore a variety of genres and authors. It's a great way for kids to discover new books, meet fellow readers, and work together as a team. Our first OBOB meeting for students will be on November 17th during school hours. Students can pick up a permission slip from the library to join the fun!
We are always looking for parent volunteers to help with battles in February as well.
Thank you, Robbie Cortez

Safety Week is Coming, Oct. 28 - Nov 1
Holt will conduct our annual Safety Week from Oct. 30 - Nov. 3 to practice a variety of safety drills. This is a good way to bring awareness to staff, students, and families about the various safety procedures that are in place to keep students safe if there is ever an emergency. Below are the drills that we will practice. Please take a few minutes and discuss these drills with your child. Your interest will allow them to share any of their concerns with you.
Monday, October 28 – Shelter Drill (i.e. Earthquake Drill): Earthquake Drills are designed to keep students safe until the earthquake stops. The alarm will sound at that time, and students will follow the Evacuation procedure to exit the building safely.
Tuesday, October 29 – Room Clear and Hold: A Room Clear and a Hold are used to keep students away from a situation (an unsafe child, a medical emergency, etc.). A Room clear is used when there is a situation inside the classroom. The teacher would direct students to leave the classroom and go to a prearranged area, typically a nearby classroom. A Hold is used when there is a situation in the hallway, and classes stay in their rooms until the situation in the hallway is resolved.
Wednesday, October 30 - Secure Drill: A Secure Drill (formerly known as a “lockout”) is used if there is something unsafe in the neighborhood. We would bring all students and staff indoors, lock all exterior doors, and not let anyone in or out of the building, but we would continue business as usual inside the building until the all-clear is given.
Thursday, October 31 - Lockdown Drill: Lockdowns are used if there is an unsafe situation inside the school. We lock all classroom doors, close blinds, and turn out the lights, and students and staff stay out of sight until each classroom is notified that we are all clear.
Friday, November 1 - Evacuation (i.e. Fire Drill): Evacuations are used to get students and staff out of the building by a route designed to protect their safety. This procedure is used for earthquake drills, fire drills, or any situation where we need to quickly evacuate students.

Kinder Hearing Screening Opt-Out
In accordance with the Oregon Department of Education’s recommendations (OAR 581-022- 0705), we will be conducting hearing screenings this fall for all kindergarten students. University of Oregon speech-language pathologists will administer the screenings. Students who do not pass an initial screening will be rescreened at a later date. If your child does not pass a second screening, you will be notified in writing, in which case a professional exam may be suggested. Students already identified as having hearing loss will not be screened. If you do not want your student to participate in the hearing screening, please complete the Opt-Out Form and return it to your child’s teacher by Oct. 28. If you want your child’s hearing checked, no response is needed.
